One use of research certainly is then being able to decide when to tell the truth and when a lie will work so much better.

For my fantasy writing, I have to admit that I have a complex set of notes that I've been taking on any number of general subjects, ranging from blacksmithing to candle-making to the size of medieval city lots to... well, pretty much anything I think might make its way into my writing. Unfortunately, my ambition outstretches anything useful I've been able to do with this. Still, every now and then I add a bit here and there. I fondly (in the old sense of "foolishly") imagine that it might be useful sometime, though occasionally it feels like I'm indexing the universe a page or two at a time...

I'm trying to be better about dating. Sometimes I'll go in to a project that I haven't looked at for a year and then I can't tell which is the newer version.

Jonathan, if I may suggest KeyNote (not the Apple one) to help you do that? It's freeware.

I'm not very high-tech. If I find a website I think I'll need for the future, I bookmark it. Other information gets put into Word documents. I have a couple of files with ongoing notes--dated in some cases so that I don't wind up taking something older for something newer. Anything I need to keep track of, I'll add a heading and start listing stuff below. I've also downloaded a few possibly useful documents, like a Steps to Eagle document that I'm planning to use when I get to the board of review scene.

So here's a question Jonathan: What are the mechanics of all that? Do you just dump everything into Word documents or something else?
