Lyle:

As I read it, this advice suggests that, though one may never be entirely through dealing with the issue to be memoired, the author would do well (as I suggest above) to really confront what happened, to gain some perspective on things such that they might be able to develop a language that's mature enough to handle their past without glossing over or refusing to engage hard-to-bear parts of the experience that, if confronted, could 1) deepen their own understanding of the event(s) as they 2) reveal aspects of personal/communal/relational identity in ways the author may not otherwise have access to and that 3) (as Patricia suggests) can be of greatest value to someone who may be experiencing something similar. Part of this process, I believe, includes reading other memoirs to see how others have approached the task and thus positioning oneself in the generic tradition so the story can be told to greatest effect to the widest audience. To do otherwise is to risk, perhaps, publishing a haphazard self-narrative that hasn't quite grown into its full rhetorical potential.

Just a few thoughts.

My primary worry about this advice: "Don’t write/publish/shop your memoir while you’re still going through the issue you wrote about" is that no memoirs would ever be published. We're never entirely through. We keep on getting better—hopefully.

Interesting commentary--I want to quickly recommend that you all read the final version of "Shattered Silence" as several revisions have taken place since the initial ARC. Melissa's story truly is one of overcoming a dark past and her's is the example of no matter what your beginning, you can choose your future--that's a powerful lesson we can all stand to continue learning.

I think that's brilliant advice, something Moore could surely have benefited from. She could have taken the time to really confront the issues and then gained greater insight in retrospect as she wrote.

Thanks for the aside, MoJo.
