Mormon literature/film conference April 7 at UVSC — and it’s free!

By Wm | 4.06.07

From the Association of Mormon Letters:

“AML’s 2007 annual meeting and conference will be held from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm in the Computer Science Building at Utah Valley State College.

The conference will feature papers and panels on many aspects of Mormon literature. This year’s focus is on Children and Young Adult fiction, and our featured speaker is RICK WALTON, noted children’s book author.

There will also be discussions on the latest Mormon films, author readings, student creative works, and a panel on Mormon folklore.

In addition to regular conference sessions, there will be a reception that evening at the Eugene and Charlotte England home starting at 6:00 p.m. for the AML Award Winners to read from their own works.

The conference is free and open to the public. The only cost will be for the AML awards luncheon. If you plan to join us at the luncheon please email as soon as possible, so we can reserve a ticket for you.

Sponsors for the conference include the UVSC Department of English & Literature and the UVSC Religious Studies Program.”

William notes: it looks like Shawn Bailey, Mahonri Stewart, Patricia Karamesines and my sister Katherine will all be in attendance so that there is worth the price of admission. Katherine will be chairing an afternoon session on Mormon rhetoric. If you attend the luncheon, you’ll see a very happy Patricia (more on that later). There will be sessions on Women and Literature, Ethics and Literature, and the one I would most like to attend (but I won’t be there) Purified by the Best Critics: Fostering Artistically Informed Criticisms and Critically Informed Art. There will also be readings and film screenings.

Also: AMV will most likely provide some coverage of some of the sessions, but if you attend a session or two that rocks your world, we welcome guest post submissions (and write-ups can be brief 2-3 paragraphs if you don’t have time for a full report). Send submissions to william AT motleyvision DOT org.

The conference was great! I’ll probably write some kind of post about it, but I’ll let Shawn and Patricia take a crack at it first. I’m very interested in hearing their comments. We had a lot of fun together (especially since it was my fist time meeting either of them!)

  2. Katherine

Hey, it was fabulous to meet you all. I wish we’d had more of an opportunity to talk. Patricia, I hadn’t read the Birds of Summer essay, and I was actually glad I hadn’t when I was listening to you read it at the reception. It’s a lovely essay, full of delicious images and well-phrased thoughts. I agree with whoever it was at the conference that said AML needs to have more readings.

    William,
It wasn’t until the conference where I realized Katherine was your sister! It was good to meet you, Katherine, and finally attach a face to the name.
It’s kind of an odd cyber world, isn’t it? Where one can discuss many, many things and be privy to each other’s thoughts months and even years before we ever meet each other face to face.

  4. Patricia Karamesines

I enjoyed meeting up with everyone, too — and finally meeting Mahonri. Like Katherine, I wish there’d been more time for us AMVers to socialize. Maybe next year we can plan a get together ere or post event.

But yikes! I’m so much older than everybody! I guess I can console myself with the fact Eric went emeritus before I did.
