I lost my last comment in the ether...hopefully this one will stick. I had gotten behind in my blog reading, but what a joy to get caught back up: thank you, thank you, thank you.

I think the major thing I would second is your emphasis on omnivorous media consumption. But I would extend it beyond music, print and art to the sciences, philosophy, and theology.

Grad school was a dream. There is something amazing about pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. It comes at a price though: language that is so specific that one can't communicate with those across campus (or across the hall in some cases).

Your omnivorous consumption is perhaps the remedy.

William, I go behind in my reading and just finally got a chance to get my had above water. Now that I have read this: Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I especially would like to second your emphasis on omnivorous media consumption. I would extend it beyond literature, music and art into the sciences, philosophy and theology.

I find that (especially in graduate school) our ability to communicate is reduced to those in our respective fields. And while this can be thrilling as this communication seems to probe the very edge of human knowledge, it is in a way pathetic to not be able to communicate to those across campus or even across the street.

Any time you wanted to make some recommendations on good speculative fiction would be fine with me.

After all, we Mormons own speculative fiction. Right? So talking about it is entirely appropriate on a Mormon arts and letters site. Right?

William,
Fantastic essay. I'm glad you located and posted it. This will be great to refer people to when talking about (Mormon) media consumption. You so smoothly glazed over your decision to not watch R-rated movies, and I fully support it. Only if more people could make that decision for the same reasons you have.

I particularly enjoy your third point. That's something that can strengthen us all. You aren't specifying WHICH genres to consume, just that we need to consume many. We need to fill our wells and do it with everything we can. Great post!

William,
thanks for this guide, tools, and call to arms. I know that I've been lazier and more narrow in my choices of media consumption than I need to be. Often it's because I feel that I lack the tools to 'properly approach' some of the things that I know I should be watching/reading/listening to, but that really shouldn't hold me back. Hopefully this will be a good motivator for me to go out and broaden my horizons.

William,

That is a great essay. You do such good work on your blog. I can relate to your pull between spec and lit fiction. Over last summer I was reading a bit of Dean Koontz, and when I tried to read some lit fiction, it took a while to get back in a different groove. In fact I am having a difficult time switching back and forth between some English classes I am currently taking. In one class we are reading modernist authors (Joyce, Stein, Faulkner, etc) and in my other class we are covering Medieval and Renassiance English lit. I agree that reading in many forms and genres is the key.
