News: Allred’s ‘The Golden Plates’ selling well
By Wm | 5.31.05
According to a May 31 Deseret News story, Mike Allred’s comic serialization of the Book of Mormon — “The Golden Plates” — is selling well. Vol. I is already in its third printing, and Vol. II came out last week.
It’s hard to say what the benchmark for a series like this should be. But Douglas Dial, one of Allred’s assistant editors, has sold 2,000 copies of Vol. I online and in his bricks-and-mortar store Fantasy Rules (Pleasant Grove). And Deseret Book continues to carry quite a lot of stock in its stores. Add in the business Deseret Book has done as well as other comics stores across the Wasatch Front, and I’d say you’re looking at at least 3,500 copies sold. Almost any Mormon novelist would be overjoyed to have those kind of sales.

A pity the comic isn’t, well, better. (At least Volume 1; I haven’t been by my comic shop for Voume 2 yet.)

Since Nate is too lazy to plug his own site, here is a link to his review of Vol. I so you can see what he means.
I haven’t read the comic. Probably won’t. It’s not my kind of thing. My interest in it is mainly as a marketing phenomenon.

I own Vol. 1. I received it as a Christmas present. I’ve always liked comic books. The art is pretty good, but it’s a pretty boring read. Not much dialogue and the tense scenes aren’t very tense. I hope the second is better.

I didn’t manage to get into a store to check this out when the first edition came out. It’s a little surprising because way back in the day I used to buy comics and this is the kind of thing that should interest me. Then again, I was foolish enough to go and sell all my 80s X-Men comic books a few weeks ago for 30 bucks. So maybe I”m not the comic book aficionado anymore that I used to be.
I’m a little sad to see that others haven’t liked the comics. I’m guessing then that I would have had the same reaction. Still, its cool someone is even trying. I’m sure there is someone out there who is going to be bearing his/her testimony about how they first came into contact with the Church by means of a comic book.

Hey, unrelated comment, but have you heard anything about AML-List? It has been down for a few monthes, right? Are they looking for a new moderator?

I haven’t heard anything — but enough people have asked me that I’ll see what I can find out.

The AML-List is not dead — it is on hiatus while the AML looks for a moderator (a thankless, time-consuming yet necessary position). A few messages were sent out recently.

Wow. I really don’t know if I’m OK with this.

In what sense Anneke? Simply the idea of the comic book version of the Book of Mormon? The fact that it’s selling well?
I assume that you are okay with the AML list not being dead ;-)

The BoM as comic book. It’s just creepily Rexbourgeois. ;)

After we paid for our kids northeast summer camp we found it tough to recover! I totally agree with you!
